What is EMDR Therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based, structured therapy that helps people heal from trauma, anxiety, and distressing life experiences. It works by helping the brain reprocess painful memories, so they no longer feel as overwhelming or intrusive.
Originally developed to treat PTSD, EMDR is now widely used for:
-
Childhood trauma or neglect
-
Anxiety and panic disorders
-
Grief and loss
-
Phobias
-
Performance anxiety
-
Medical trauma
-
Disturbing life events (car accidents, assaults, relationship betrayal, etc.)
EMDR doesn’t require you to talk in detail about the painful memory. Instead, it focuses on the way the memory is stored in the brain—and helps "unstick" it using bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, tapping, or audio tones.
How Does EMDR Work?
Our brains have a natural ability to heal and integrate experiences—just like our bodies do. But when something traumatic or deeply distressing happens, the memory can get “frozen” in the nervous system. That’s why some events continue to trigger anxiety, guilt, shame, or fear—sometimes long after they’ve passed.
EMDR helps reprocess these memories by stimulating both sides of the brain while you briefly revisit the event in a safe, guided way. Over time, the memory becomes less emotionally charged. You may still remember what happened—but the sting is gone. You feel more in control, less reactive, and more like yourself.
